Learning a Trade Online

Rogersville TN student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Rogersville TN students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Rogersville TN trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Rogersville TN area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Rogersville TN area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Rogersville TN is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Rogersville TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Rogersville TN area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Rogersville TN contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Rogersville TN, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
