A number of students make the error of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added factors including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Ekwok AK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Ekwok AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Ekwok AK trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Ekwok AK area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Ekwok AK area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Ekwok AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Ekwok AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Ekwok AK area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Ekwok AK company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ekwok AK, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
