new skills training sign Galena AKDeciding to begin a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Galena AK are important decisions that will profoundly affect your future career. But with so many trade schools to select from, just how do you go about locating the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are significant factors when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added considerations including reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Perhaps you have already decided on one that you have for years desired to pursue. For example, maybe you have always enjoyed working on your car and have given thought to using that ability to earn a living as an automotive tech. Or maybe a member of the family has had a long and successful career in a particular trade or vocation and you would love to follow in her or his footsteps. Regardless of what your motivation is for entering a trade, there is likely a program available that will provide the training that you require. Vocational Schools Online

Galena AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Galena AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Galena AK trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Galena AK area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Galena AK area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Galena AK is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Galena AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Galena AK area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Galena AK contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Galena AK, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    Galena, Alaska

Galena (/ɡəˈliːnə/) (Notaalee Denh in Koyukon) is a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. At the 2010 census the population was 470, with a 2016 estimate of 488 inhabitants. Galena was established in 1918, and a military airfield was built adjacent to the city during World War II. The city was incorporated in 1971.

The Koyukon Athabascans had seasonal camps in the area and moved as the wild game migrated. In the summer many families floated on rafts to the Yukon River to fish for salmon. There were 12 summer fish camps located on the Yukon River between the Koyukuk River and the Nowitna River. Galena was established in 1918 near an Athabascan fish camp called Henry's Point. It became a supply and point for nearby lead ore mines that opened in 1918 and 1919, and from which the place takes its name.[5]

In 1941 and 1942, during World War II,[5] a military air field was built adjacent to the civilian airport, and the two facilities shared the runway and flight line facilities. This air field was designated Galena Air Force Station shortly after the split of the United States Air Force from the United States Army, which occurred as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. During the 1950s, the construction of additional military facilities at Galena and the nearby Campion Air Force Station, in support of Galena's mission as a forward operating base under the auspices of the 5072nd Air Base Group, headquartered at Elmendorf Air Force Base, near Anchorage, provided improvements to the airport and the local infrastructure, causing economic growth for the area.[citation needed]
