Learning a Vocation Online

Louisville TN student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Louisville TN students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, for example studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Louisville TN trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Louisville TN area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Louisville TN area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Louisville TN is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Louisville TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Louisville TN area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Louisville TN contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Louisville TN, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
