Learning a Trade Online

Rockwood TN student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Rockwood TN students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Rockwood TN trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Rockwood TN area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Rockwood TN area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Rockwood TN is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Rockwood TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Rockwood TN area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Rockwood TN contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Rockwood TN, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
