Online Trade Schools

Rexford KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Rexford KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Rexford KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Rexford KS area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Rexford KS area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Rexford KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Rexford KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Rexford KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Rexford KS contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Rexford KS, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
