Online Vocational Schools

Richfield KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Richfield KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Richfield KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Richfield KS area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Richfield KS area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Richfield KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Richfield KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Richfield KS area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Richfield KS contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Richfield KS, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
