Online Trade Schools

Republic KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Republic KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Republic KS trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Republic KS area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Republic KS area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Republic KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Republic KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Republic KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Republic KS company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Republic KS, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
