Learning a Trade Online

Windom KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Windom KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, such as studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Windom KS trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Windom KS area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Windom KS area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Windom KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Windom KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Windom KS area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Windom KS contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Windom KS, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
