Online Vocational Schools

Hazelton KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Hazelton KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Hazelton KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Hazelton KS area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Hazelton KS area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Hazelton KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Hazelton KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Hazelton KS area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Hazelton KS company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hazelton KS, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
