Learning a Trade Online

Frontenac KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Frontenac KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Frontenac KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Frontenac KS area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Frontenac KS area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Frontenac KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Frontenac KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Frontenac KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Frontenac KS company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Frontenac KS, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
