Learning a Vocation Online

Altamont KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Altamont KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Altamont KS trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Altamont KS area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Altamont KS area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Altamont KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Altamont KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Altamont KS area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Altamont KS company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Altamont KS, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
