Online Vocational Schools

Lane KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Lane KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Lane KS trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Lane KS area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Lane KS area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Lane KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Lane KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Lane KS area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Lane KS contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Lane KS, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
