Trade Schools Online

Ingalls KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Ingalls KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Ingalls KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Ingalls KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Ingalls KS company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Ingalls KS, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
