Online Vocational Schools

Harrisville WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Harrisville WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Harrisville WV trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Harrisville WV area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Harrisville WV area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Harrisville WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Harrisville WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Harrisville WV area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Harrisville WV contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Harrisville WV, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
