Online Vocational Schools

Granville WV student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Granville WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Granville WV trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Granville WV area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Granville WV area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Granville WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Granville WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Granville WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Granville WV company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Granville WV, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
