Learning a Vocation Online

Green Spring WV student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Green Spring WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Green Spring WV trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Green Spring WV area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Green Spring WV area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Green Spring WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Green Spring WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Green Spring WV area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Green Spring WV contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Green Spring WV, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
