Learning a Vocation Online

Murrells Inlet SC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Murrells Inlet SC students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Murrells Inlet SC trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Murrells Inlet SC area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Murrells Inlet SC area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Murrells Inlet SC is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Murrells Inlet SC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Murrells Inlet SC area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Murrells Inlet SC contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Carolina and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Murrells Inlet SC, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
