Online Trade Schools

Reevesville SC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Reevesville SC students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Reevesville SC trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Reevesville SC area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Reevesville SC area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Reevesville SC is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Reevesville SC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Reevesville SC area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Reevesville SC contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Carolina and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Reevesville SC, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
