However with numerous trade schools to select from, exactly how do you go about identifying the right one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will receive the comprehensive training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Naturally the location and cost of the training are important considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Additional factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will address some of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Saint Francis KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Saint Francis KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Saint Francis KS trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Saint Francis KS area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Saint Francis KS area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Saint Francis KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Saint Francis KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Saint Francis KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Saint Francis KS contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Saint Francis KS, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
