However with numerous vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you approach locating the right one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some prospective students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their home or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are important factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Sabetha KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Sabetha KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Sabetha KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Sabetha KS area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Sabetha KS area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Sabetha KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Sabetha KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Sabetha KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Sabetha KS contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Sabetha KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
