Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the complete training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Or they might be attracted to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Manter KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Manter KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Manter KS trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Manter KS area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Manter KS area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Manter KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Manter KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Manter KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Manter KS company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Manter KS, verify that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
