Learning a Vocation Online

Oakley KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Oakley KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Oakley KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Oakley KS area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Oakley KS area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Oakley KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Oakley KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Oakley KS area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Oakley KS contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Oakley KS, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
