However with so many vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about locating the best one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will receive the extensive training needed to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Others might be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are critical factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other factors including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address several of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Halstead KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Halstead KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Halstead KS trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Halstead KS area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Halstead KS area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Halstead KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Halstead KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Halstead KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Halstead KS contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Halstead KS, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
