Learning a Vocation Online

Oketo KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Oketo KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Accreditation.  Numerous Oketo KS area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Oketo KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Oketo KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Oketo KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Oketo KS contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Oketo KS, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
