Learning a Trade Online

Catharine KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Catharine KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Catharine KS trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Catharine KS area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Catharine KS area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Catharine KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Catharine KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Catharine KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Catharine KS contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Catharine KS, check that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
