Trade Schools Online

Barnard KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Barnard KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Barnard KS trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Barnard KS area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Barnard KS area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Barnard KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Barnard KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Barnard KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Barnard KS contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Barnard KS, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
