Learning a Trade Online

Wheeler WI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Wheeler WI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Wheeler WI trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Wheeler WI area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Wheeler WI area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Wheeler WI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Wheeler WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Wheeler WI area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Wheeler WI contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Wheeler WI, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
