However with so many trade schools to choose from, exactly how do you approach identifying the ideal one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will obtain the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are critical factors when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Mauston WI student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Mauston WI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Mauston WI trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Mauston WI area and throughout the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Mauston WI area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Mauston WI is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Mauston WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Mauston WI area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Mauston WI company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mauston WI, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
