Not only do you need to confirm that you will obtain the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the error of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Others might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are important considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Mather WI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Mather WI students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Mather WI trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Mather WI area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Mather WI area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Mather WI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Mather WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Mather WI area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Mather WI company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mather WI, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
