Vocational Schools Online

Sharples WV student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Sharples WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online education, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Sharples WV trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Sharples WV area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Sharples WV area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Sharples WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Sharples WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Sharples WV area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Sharples WV contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Sharples WV, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Battle of Blair Mountain

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor uprising in United States history and one of the largest organized armed uprisings since the American Civil War.[3] The conflict occurred in Logan County, West Virginia, as part of the Coal Wars, a series of early-20th-century labor disputes in Appalachia. Up to 100 people were killed, and many more arrested. The United Mine Workers saw major declines in membership, but the long-term publicity led to some improvements in working conditions.

For five days from late August to early September 1921, some 10,000 armed coal miners confronted 3,000 lawmen and strikebreakers (called the Logan Defenders)[4] who were backed by coal mine operators during the miners' attempt to unionize the southwestern West Virginia coalfields when tensions rose between workers and mine management. The battle ended after approximately one million rounds were fired[5] and the United States Army intervened by presidential order.[6]

On May 19, 1920, 12 Baldwin-Felts agents, including Lee Felts, arrived in Matewan, West Virginia and promptly met with Albert Felts, who was already in the area. Albert and Lee were the brothers of Thomas Felts, the co-owner and director of the agency. Albert had already been in the area and had tried to bribe Mayor Testerman with $500 to place machine guns on roofs in the town; Testerman refused.[7] That afternoon Albert and Lee along with 11 other men set out to the Stone Mountain Coal Co. property. The first family they evicted was a woman and her children; the woman's husband was not home at the time. They forced them out at gunpoint and threw their belongings in the road under a light but steady rain. The miners who saw it were furious, and sent word to town.[8]
