Learning a Trade Online

Prichard WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Prichard WV students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Prichard WV trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Prichard WV area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Prichard WV area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Prichard WV is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Prichard WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Prichard WV area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Prichard WV company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Prichard WV, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
