Learning a Vocation Online

Nimitz WV student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Nimitz WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Nimitz WV trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Nimitz WV area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Nimitz WV area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Nimitz WV is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Nimitz WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Nimitz WV area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Nimitz WV company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Nimitz WV, check that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
