Learning a Trade Online

Millwood WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Millwood WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online education, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Millwood WV trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Millwood WV area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Millwood WV area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Millwood WV is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Millwood WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Millwood WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Millwood WV contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Millwood WV, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    West Virginia Route 62

West Virginia Route 62 is a north–south state highway in western West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 25 in Dunbar. The northern terminus is at Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 33 in Ripley.

Up until the late 1960s, WV 62 was designated as U.S. Route 35 from Dunbar to Point Pleasant, crossing the Silver Bridge into Gallipolis, Ohio. After the Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967 (necessitating the building of a new bridge, the Silver Memorial Bridge—finished in 1969), US 35 was moved to the south bank (replacing the former WV 17) of the Kanawha River and US 35's previous route was designated as WV 62.
