Learning a Vocation Online

Marlinton WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Marlinton WV students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Marlinton WV trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Marlinton WV area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Marlinton WV area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Marlinton WV is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Marlinton WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Marlinton WV area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Marlinton WV contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Marlinton WV, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

New Englanders Marlin and Sewell built a cabin in what would become Marlinton, but after various religious disputes, Sewell moved into a nearby hollowed-out sycamore tree. In 1751, surveyor John Lewis discovered the pair. Sewell eventually settled on the eastern side of Sewell Mountain, near present-day Rainelle, WV.[8]
