Trade Schools Online

Glen Fork WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Glen Fork WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to ask Glen Fork WV trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Glen Fork WV area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Glen Fork WV area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Glen Fork WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Glen Fork WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Glen Fork WV area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Glen Fork WV contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Glen Fork WV, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
