Learning a Trade Online

Gassaway WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Gassaway WV students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Gassaway WV trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Gassaway WV area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Gassaway WV area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Gassaway WV is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Gassaway WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Gassaway WV area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Gassaway WV contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Gassaway WV, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Gassaway, West Virginia

Gassaway is a town in Braxton County, West Virginia, in the United States. The population was 908 at the 2010 census. Gassaway was incorporated in 1905 and named for Henry Gassaway Davis, the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1904.[6] The center of population of West Virginia is located approximately 7 miles (11 km) north of Gassaway.[7]

The town was originally created at the ends of two divisions of the Coal and Coke Railway, one originating in Charleston and the other originating in Elkins. Because of its central location, the area was an ideal place to build shops to facilitate the transition between the relatively flat Charleston division, which could operate with standard equipment, and the more hilly Elkins division of the Coal & Coke which required heavier engines. The town was laid out in 1904, and over the next decade, businesses and infrastructure such as hotels, a bank, stores, schools, a hospital, office buildings and churches appeared to serve the growing population. By 1915, the Coal & Coke Railway Company had completed work on a depot to facilitate passenger service to the town.[8] The Gassaway Depot still stands today and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.[9]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.22 square miles (3.16 km2), of which, 1.16 square miles (3.00 km2) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) is water.[12]
