Online Trade Schools

Beech Bottom WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Beech Bottom WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Beech Bottom WV trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Beech Bottom WV area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Beech Bottom WV area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Beech Bottom WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Beech Bottom WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Beech Bottom WV area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Beech Bottom WV company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Beech Bottom WV, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
