But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach finding the best one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will obtain the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some potential students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are important factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Mesa WA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Mesa WA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Mesa WA trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Mesa WA area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Mesa WA area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Mesa WA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Mesa WA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Mesa WA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Mesa WA contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Washington and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Mesa WA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
