Learning a Vocation Online

Greenacres WA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Greenacres WA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Greenacres WA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Greenacres WA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Greenacres WA contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Washington and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Greenacres WA, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
