Online Vocational Schools

Ladysmith VA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Ladysmith VA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Ladysmith VA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Ladysmith VA area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Ladysmith VA area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Ladysmith VA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Ladysmith VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Ladysmith VA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Ladysmith VA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Ladysmith VA, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
