Vocational Schools Online

Jewell Ridge VA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Jewell Ridge VA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Jewell Ridge VA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Jewell Ridge VA area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Jewell Ridge VA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Jewell Ridge VA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Jewell Ridge VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Jewell Ridge VA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Jewell Ridge VA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Jewell Ridge VA, verify that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
