Online Vocational Schools

Glen Lyn VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Glen Lyn VA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Glen Lyn VA area.

An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Glen Lyn VA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Glen Lyn VA, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices.
