Learning a Trade Online

Rupert VT student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Rupert VT students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Rupert VT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Rupert VT area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Rupert VT company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Vermont and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Rupert VT, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
