Online Vocational Schools

Riverton UT student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Riverton UT students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Riverton UT trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Riverton UT area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Riverton UT area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Riverton UT is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Riverton UT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Riverton UT area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Riverton UT company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Utah and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Riverton UT, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
