Learning a Trade Online

Golden TX student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Golden TX students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Golden TX trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Golden TX area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Golden TX area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Golden TX is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Golden TX area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Golden TX area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Golden TX contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Texas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Golden TX, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
