new skills training sign Oakland TNDeciding to begin a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Oakland TN are important decisions that will profoundly affect your long term career. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the complete training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are significant factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the availability of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Oakland TN student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Oakland TN students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, for example studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Oakland TN trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Oakland TN area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Oakland TN area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Oakland TN is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Oakland TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Oakland TN area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Oakland TN company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Oakland TN, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
