Learning a Vocation Online

Rumford RI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Rumford RI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online training, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Rumford RI trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Rumford RI area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Rumford RI area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Rumford RI is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Rumford RI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Rumford RI area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Rumford RI contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Rhode Island and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Rumford RI, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
