Of course the location and cost of the programs are important factors when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Tarentum PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Tarentum PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Tarentum PA trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Tarentum PA area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Tarentum PA area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Tarentum PA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Tarentum PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Tarentum PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Tarentum PA contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Tarentum PA, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
