new skills training sign Slippery Rock PADeciding to enter into a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Slippery Rock PA are serious decisions that will greatly influence your long term career. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you go about identifying the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are important factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered including the accessibility of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Slippery Rock PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Slippery Rock PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online education, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Slippery Rock PA trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Slippery Rock PA area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Slippery Rock PA area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Slippery Rock PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Slippery Rock PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Slippery Rock PA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Slippery Rock PA company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Slippery Rock PA, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
